Transforming Unscheduled Care Together10th July 2019
This weeks blog is from Maria Curren discussing her experiences with the Service User and Carer Unscheduled Care Reference Group.
Are you a service user or carer who has experienced unscheduled care i.e. out of hours services, Emergency Department services and discharge processes from hospital into different care settings, including home? I saw this same call 2 years ago, at a time when I had recently lost both my parents who had gone into hospital via the unscheduled care route and had sadly died in hospital.
My dad had Alzheimer’s and was living in a care home and I was frustrated by the numerous times we were told to take him to A&E, sit for hours and then be sent home. This was stressful for him and for us as a family. I therefore decided to join the Service User and Carer Unscheduled Care Reference Group when they were looking for members. I felt that I had experience which I wanted to share with those who were seeking to transform the system and bring about change. This was a new experience for me as I had never been involved or put myself forward for work like this before. While somewhat daunting, the support and training members receive has been really helpful.
Unscheduled care is a priority area for action and since joining the group I have experienced the genuine desire and commitment of health professionals to engage with service users and carers and listen to our voice, seeking collectively to transform the way things are done.
As the work around unscheduled care grows we now need new members to join us in this important work. Service user and carer input is vital to help shape plans and influence decisions with regard to the future design and delivery of unscheduled care services.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the important transformation work around unscheduled care.
